Is Blogging our Best Modern Creative Medium?

Tons of people are online today and many artists are considering starting a blog to promote themselves and share their artwork with the world.

Starting a blog is easy. I recommend using WordPress. It’s an excellent platform and provides great customer support, but operating and maintaining a blog is much more involved than you realize if you haven’t had one before.

In this post, I’ll discuss the advantages and disadvantages of having your own blog and help you to make a decision to see if you want to start one yourself.

Let’s get into it!

Advantages

Blogs are great ‘cause you can post anything you want. Videos, pics of your artwork, you can write articles about yourself, your work and philosophy. You can post entertaining and original stories. Anything your heart desires, all of this can be posted online and visible to everybody in the world.

Blogging will give you a sense of freedom and power; just thinking about the millions of people that can view your content. Many have turned themselves into world-famous celebrities, exclusively by their blogs. You can also have different blogs and in each one deal with different interests/topics.

Blogging can be done anywhere. Whether you’re in the prairie fields of Kansas or in the Outback of Australia surrounded by bouncing kangaroos. As long as you have a laptop and an internet connection, you’re good to go.

You all know that I love mobility, being able to do creative work any place in the world is a huge benefit. The economies of the world’s great cities rise and fall, so having a location independent blog/business that can be done anywhere is an awesome concept.

Starting a blog is quite affordable compared to other hobbies or businesses, with a few hundred dollars you can begin. Of course, the more involved your blog is the more investment in time and money there will be.

Blogging can become a lucrative business for those who are diligent, dedicated, and good at promotion/marketing. If you’re not good at the business end of things, I recommend hiring people that have experience in this area.

Drawbacks

The drawbacks of blogging are there too. If you really want to have a successful blog then be prepared to dedicate a good portion of your life to it. Like anything else, blogging takes a serious commitment of time and energy.

I think of myself as being a well-rounded person because a lot of the work I have done, people I met, and traveling has been completely done off-line. For example, I don’t use GPS to find a new location. I look at street addresses and as a last case scenario, I’ll ask for directions. I would imagine that not a lot of people today can live without technology, it’s become a necessity of life in the modern world. Be prepared to spend lots of hours in front of the computer. Would you rather be in front of the computer all day or painting your next masterpiece?

If your blog is also a business and a source of income, then expect fierce competition. Everybody and their second cousin has a blog now, so you definitely have to create something that sets your blog apart in all aspects.

Ask yourself:

How will having a blog benefit my life and business?

Am I ready to dedicate my life to this thing?

Do I want to be online all the time or would I rather spend my time playing with the kids or doing any other non-online activity?

What about a balance? Six hours on – Six hours off?

Unfortunately, (especially in the beginning of your work) you will need to spend a great deal of time online. And once your site is built you still need to add fresh content and focus on marketing on a continuous basis.
