Definition of Psychedelic:
of or noting a mental state characterized by a profound sense of intensified sensory perception, sometimes accompanied by severe perceptual distortion and hallucinations and by extreme feelings of either euphoria or despair
“Thud Thud Thud”
I heard it 3 times.
“Thud Thud Thud!”
Three times again, louder than before.
It was 6 o’clock in the morning, what the hell! I was still asleep!
Now, I remember why someone was knocking at my door and for what purpose, so early today.
I quickly arose from my bed, put on some clothes and opened the front door.
“Hey, are you ready for this!?” asked Jeffrey, smiling from ear to ear. Dressed in his usual hippy attire, with a fluorescent orange colored t-shirt, various wooden, clay and stone beaded necklaces, strong hiking shoes, and sunglasses so dark and funky, that he looked like he could have been a character, straight out of an animated movie.
“Come in, come in,” I said, waving him inside.
We sat down in the living room. I cleared some things from off the coffee table, and Jeff placed “It” down for us to behold.
There “It” was, I had never tripped before, and I felt like I was looking at something from a children’s fairytale book. As if “It” were glowing. Like “It” was a living being, just resting there, still, but with great mystery and enchantment. I didn’t know how I would react and what was going to happen to me later today.
Jeffrey looked at me, he could tell that I was nervous, “Are you ready for this mate? This is going to change your life, you’ll never be the same again. Your body will feel like your on a roller coaster and you’ll just be laying on the damn floor!”
I felt good that Jeffrey was with me today, on my soon to be First Trip, because I had no idea what I was doing.
I picked up the Blue Mushroom, holding it softly, admiring its smooth texture and rich colors. I know this is a potent fungus and I know that today will be an unforgettable day…
Varieties of Psychedelic Plants
Benefits and Dangers
How to be Safer
Are you one who has always been curious about psychedelic plants, but never brave enough to try them?
Have you heard horror stories of bad trips and “nightmare” like experiences and want to know what they are really like?
Psychedelic plants have always been a very controversial topic. Certain people and cultures from around the world revere them as holy and sacred. Others consider them dangerous and wish them to be illegal for everyone.
In this post, we’ll discuss their history, their origin, the benefits and dangers of using them. Allowing you to take this information and use them with caution, if you do decide to partake of these ancient plants.
We´ll also discuss safe and easily accessible alternatives to plants, which have similar effects.
Let’s get into it, let’s go Tripping!
The first time you consume a psychedelic plant will more than likely be the most powerful experience of your life. You will be blown away by the intense feelings and deep emotional states you will encounter. You´ll feel all the emotions you are capable of feeling, while under the influence. From pure bliss to dreadful fear. Usually, most feel the euphoric bliss more often than the strong negative feelings, but I want to be as honest as possible with you all so you may feel negative feelings as well.
The plants basically take everything that’s inside of you, all your thoughts, memories, emotions, and bring them from the deepest parts of your mind to the front of your consciousness. You then have to endure, analyze and process vast amounts of information about yourself. In that sense, it’s like a very personal, customized therapy session, which is completely different and unique for every user. One’s individual history and present mental state will uniquely influence each person’s psychedelic experience.
A lot of people think of trippers as mindless stoners, who just want to get high and have fun. Sure trippers laugh and act goofy when they are going through the happy pleasant parts of the trip. But the plants wish to teach us a wide range of things, and for that it must go deep into our consciousness and basically clean us out, bringing everything to the forefront of our minds.
For people who can’t handle their past, it’s probably the most unpleasant experience they will ever have. For others who are ready to learn from their past errors and move on with their lives, willing to change and evolve, it will show them beauty and wisdom, that they never knew existed, guiding them and showing them the right direction to turn in life.
Everything you see will seem more vivid and intense. Its very unusual to have full-blown hallucinations, where you might see imaginary creatures run or fly past you. These are exaggerations made mostly by Hollywood. They are fun and entertaining, but most normal mentally stable people, will not see this form of open-eyed visuals.
What most do see is closed eye visuals. When one relaxes and closes their eyes, the back of their eyelids become like an IMAX 3D movie theater. The visions are absolutely stunning.
It’s like looking through an ever-changing and moving kaleidoscope, with every color in existence morphing from one form to another. To think that the most intense beauty can be seen with the eyes closed. That’s an amazing thought. The forms are not just geometric or organic, but every image you have ever seen throughout your entire life could be seen in these moments of psychedelic theater.
This is the time to be inspired and thankful to the plants, visions like this are usually only seen during the dream state. The difference is you are fully conscious of what’s going on. Dreams are easily forgotten, but a psychedelic trip is never forgotten. The experience will be with you for the rest of your days, unlike some other drug or alcohol experiences, where you might black out, not remembering what happened or what you did the next day.
Sounds will be so intense that you will feel them throughout your entire body. With eyes closed, you´ll see a perfectly synchronized light show. The music providing the soundtrack to the colored forms and figures fastly moving about against the backdrop of your eyelids, which have been transformed into a deluxe movie cinema.
You’ll also hear things in your mind, sort of like when a popular song gets stuck in your head. But these songs or sounds will be as loud as listening to a stereo full blast. Though you’ll probably realize that you’re just tripping, and the amazing sounds you hear will bring great joy to your heart and make you feel like you’re in the best concert in the world.
Effect on the Body
You´ll have a fluid like sensation throughout your body. Increased energy, lack of thirst, hunger, and fatigue. Activities like sex or swimming in a refreshing river will feel extraordinary. Food will taste 1000 times better, air will smell fresher, and every physical sensation will be like you’re experiencing it again, for the first time.
As you watch nearby trees swaying in the breeze, you’ll feel your body swaying with them, as they move from side to side. You´ll feel strongly connected with whatever natural surroundings are around you, during your trip.
Varieties of Psychedelic Plants
These are some of the most commonly used Psychedelic Plants on Earth.
There are two main types of magic mushrooms, which are actually a fungus and not plants. They are Amanita Muscaria and Psilocybin. Amanita is the famous red mushroom with white polka dots and the Psilocybin mushrooms have a yellowish colored cap with stems which turn dark blueish after picking. Both of them are easy to identify, but should only be consumed if absolutely sure they are the right ones, because certain mushrooms are deadly poisonous.
It’s interesting that the red Amanita Muscaria is in the same family as the White Angel of Death mushroom. They are identical in size and form, with the only distinguishing feature being their color. Like two opposite siblings with two completely different agendas. One with the power to kill and the other to enlighten. A true life and death fungi.
Amanita Muscaria has been consumed for more than six thousand years. It was originally eaten by the tribesman of Northern Siberia. They first discovered it, when they noticed their reindeer’s behavior had changed after eating the bright red mushrooms, which can be found underneath pine trees, proudly protruding above the pine needles, resting upon the forest floor.
The tribesmen partook of the shroom and it changed their entire culture, and history as we know it. It is said that the Pagan legend of Santa Clause originated in these Northen parts of the world. “Santa” was the shaman of the tribe, who came into the center of their wooden homes through the roof, wearing a bright red suit and carrying a sack full of brightly colored gifts. These magical gifts were of course Amanita mushrooms, and when consumed the festivities began. Celebrations to warm the hearts of all members of the tribe, and give strength to endure the brutal winters of these rugged lands.
I recommend that Amanita Muscaria only be consumed by experienced trippers, because its one of the most powerful psychedelics on the planet. Bringing users into profoundly bizarre and unexplainable altered states of consciousness. Its no wonder that the tribal peoples encountered elves, flying reindeer and “magic”, during their trips. These mushrooms have the ability to teleport one to truly sensational and profound psychedelic trances. Users beware.
Psilocybin mushrooms are probably the most popular psychedelic substance. They can be found around the world, usually growing in cow pastures. They have yellowish colored caps and stems which bruise dark blue. Its effect is quite powerful, but the experience can be controlled by the amount one decides to take. A smaller amount will produce mellower effects than a larger dosage. For this reason, it’s a good plant for beginner trippers to experiment with. Effects last 4- 8 hours.
It will produce both audio and visual hallucinations, with a profound spiritual and emotional effect.
Peyote and San Pedro Cactus
Peyote and San Pedro Cactus are sacred power plants. They contain mescaline and other alkaloids which produce powerful spiritual hallucinations. They are considered to be sacred to the indigenous peoples of both Central and South America and have been used in shamanic ritual for at least five thousand years. Their effect lasts for 12- 24 hours, for this reason, they should only be consumed if you have 1-2 days to dedicate to your trip.
To receive the full benefit of these cacti, they should be consumed in their natural environment, giving you a deep connection to the land where they are grown. This will help to grow your understanding of their rich and complex history amongst the native peoples.
Ayahuasca aka Yage
A famous and commonly used preparation of selected plants from the Amazon region of South America. Ayahuasca has been used in ritual and as medicine by the indigenous people of the jungles for thousands of years. Its effect is extremely powerful physically, mentally, spiritually and emotionally, giving one a sensation similar to an Out of Body Experience. For most users, it causes vomiting and diarrhea, which purges and cleans both mind and body. It is said to directly affect the pineal gland, which is the gland found in the center of our brains.
DMT or N-Dimethyltryptamine, is found in plants like ayahuasca, and also found in the poisonous secretions of the Colorado River Toad. Using the DMT extract is like entering a dream state instantly after consuming, but the effect only lasts 10 minutes, making it the quickest trip of all.
LSD aka Acid aka Lysergic Acid Diethylamide, was discovered by Albert Hofmann, a Swiss chemist, in 1943. It is derived from the fungus ergot. He famously tripped for the first time on LSD, while riding his bicycle home from work one day, after consuming a huge dose of the newly discovered substance.
LSD has inspired some of the most influential artists and musicians of all time, including Jimmy Hendrix, Jim Morrison of The Doors, The Beatles, Marilyn Manson, and Oscar-winning actor Jack Nicholson.
The morning glory flower is commonly used as a decorative plant and can be found in many nurseries and gardens around the world. It has a beautiful blue flower, that grows on a vine. Its seeds are used in shamanic ritual by the natives of Mexico. It contains an alkaloid known as LSA, which is similar in structure and effect to LSD.
Absinthe is another Swiss invention, which was originally fabricated in the late eighteenth century. The effects are like drinking hard liquor combined with smoking marijuana. It contains a very high alcohol content, wormwood, and other botanical herbs. Known as the Green Fairy or the Green Dragon. Many famous artists were known to partake of this infamous green drink, including Ernest Hemingway, Edgar Alan Poe, Pablo Picasso and Vincent Van Gogh.
Van Gogh might have cut off his own ear, while under the influence of the green beverage. He was known to be a regular drinker of absinthe, and it could have caused him to lose his mind and enter delirious states of madness. So if you do drink of the Green Fairy, be prepared to meet the Green Dragon as well.
Benefits and Dangers
The benefits of these plants are vast. They will open your mind to altered states of consciousness that you never knew existed. You will understand yourself and your past, better than ever before. You will be renewed spiritually, feeling energized and inspired. The plants will guide your path, showing you the direction you should take in life.
The dangers are also vast. Besides mental and emotional trauma, which requires you to endure intense feelings ranging from depression to feeling like you’ve lost your mind, like you’ll be tripping for the rest of your life and never come down. You could also be so deep in a trip that you don’t realize what you are doing. When consuming super high doses, it is common to be paralyzed, this effect could last several hours. Definitely not a good time to be driving or walking near any steep cliffs or over high bridges, accidentally plunging to your death dying in an intense psychedelic trance.
How to be Safer
Take Lower Doses
For those who wish to trip, but want a milder, mellower experience the easiest thing to do, is to take a lower dosage. After you become more familiar with the plants and their effects, you can gradually increase the dosage. Everyone will react differently to each plant, some people have a naturally lower or higher tolerance. Just like alcohol, some can drink for more than 20 hours straight and still stand up and talk, having somewhat meaningful conversations. Others drink a dozen drinks and they either run around like crazy people or pass out drunk. Plants are similar in this way, and no one reacts the same way to each plant.
Less frequent usage of the plants will also allow you to recover and understand lessons better. I recommend tripping 1-3 times per year.
Create the Perfect Setting
The place and setting you decide to consume the plants will make all the difference in the world. You shouldn’t consume in a place where there will be any uncomfortable distractions, or with people that you don’t care for. All your feelings will be magnified by 100, so choose your setting and company wisely.
You should trip with your closest and most trusted friends. Looking out for each other and bonding in a spiritual way, creating deeper friendships with your fellow trippers.
The best place to trip would be out in the woods, or in the desert, in the middle of nowhere. A place with few people, abundant nature, and a clear night sky full of stars.
Trip with a Shamanic Guide or Experienced Tripper
During your first experiences using plants, you should partake with a shaman or someone who has tripped many many times in the past. These people are experts and will help calm you down and keep you safe if you go through a dark spot in your trip.
Remember, the feelings will pass. Sometimes we may feel like we´ll never come down. The effects are only temporary, but the memory will remain forever. Reminding yourself this will give you some comfort during the rough times of your trip.
For those who believe that psychedelic plants are the only way to trip and achieve altered states of consciousness, you couldn’t be more wrong. There are a variety of methods to reach these states and they are natural and free. Anyone can trip at any time. These methods do require practice and discipline to achieve the full benefit, but they are equally powerful and can have spectacular results for us all.
Trip safely in your bed every night as you sleep.
Dreams are basically unconscious visions of the night. To benefit and learn from these visions, we must become conscious during the dream state, otherwise we quickly forget everything almost instantly upon waking.
Some people have a natural ability to be conscious and remember their dreams. These people are quite special. They remember every one of their dreams, from their entire lives, since when they were children. This is a rare gift, but it does occur.
What can dreams teach us?
We learn about ourselves and what goes on in our subconscious mind. We encounter incredible dreamscapes and scenery of vivid color and bizarre beauty. Getting ideas for our next art project or a story for a book or movie. Some have even told of seeing the future, within their dreams.
In order to increase consciousness and memory during the dream state, one must increase awareness during the day, always making notes and keeping a journal, of waking and sleeping life. Recording new ideas and latest inspirations.
One little trick to do to increase awareness is to look at your hands, then look at your surroundings and ask yourself if you are awake or asleep. This little trick done regularly throughout the day, every day, will later crossover to your dream state. One night you’ll be dreaming and be looking at your hands, then looking around at your dream scenery and you’ll ask yourself the same question. When you finally answer YES to that question, you will be conscious during the dream state and it will be a very happy moment. At this point, you can begin to freely explore the dream world and interact with the people and objects you encounter.
Little by little, your abilities will grow. Giving you the chance to experience anything you desire, whether that be flying over gorgeous dreamscapes, meeting distant friends, or whatever fantasy you would like to have.
Music and Dance
Anyone who has gone to a Rock or Electronic concert can tell you the power of music. The rhythms of music are well known to alter our conscious states, creating a wide range of feelings, and causing our bodies to move in sync with the musical beats. Certain tribal cultures that don’t have access to psychedelic plants have used music as their preferred method of elevating their spirits.
Each style and genre of music has a different effect on us. Some music is dark and depressive, and other is designed to make us feel happy and relaxed. Listening and experimenting to these various styles is another way to find the “Way”.
Music combined with dance is a powerful combination, which is the reason why music has been revered as one of the greatest art forms of all time.
Each plant and each method you use to develop your mind, will take you closer to your goal of learning and growing as an individual.
Power Plants will inspire you as an artist and give your art a deeper, more complex look. You will feel more in touch with yourself and nature and achieve spiritual growth. Your relationship with your tripping partners will be stronger and you’ll have amazing memories that will last a lifetime.
The most important thing to remember is to respect and honor the plants. They are sacred and have much to show us. There’s a reason man has found them to be mysterious and powerful teachers since the beginning of history. Some even say that these plants are what elevated our consciousness during our early stages of development. Allowing us to evolve to who we are today; intelligent beings with the ability to make tools and adapt to live in any environment on Earth.
Instead of fear, we should have respect and reverence for these sacred teachers. Honoring them as the ancient guides that they are.
For those who decide not to partake, you have many good and powerful options, which can equally show you the “Way” and teach you what it is that you seek.
I hope that everyone who reads this has a chance to see beauty so profound that they stand in awe, with feelings of great appreciation. Then let them transform their visions into precious works of art for all to enjoy.
May your artwork and soul cross paths, as you come to a deeper understanding of yourself and your place amidst the vast ever changing and ever evolving universe we inhabit.
Jeffrey looked at me with his eyes wide open, pupils still dilated. I couldn’t even see the color of his eyes, I only saw bright shining blackness, which reflected my tripped out face in perfect detail.
We were completely exhausted as if we just ran two double marathons. “Was it worth it buddy?” he asked me, displaying huge crazy teeth, as his sunglasses almost fell off his nose.
It was the only thing I could say. My head was still elevated far beyond the stars and into the mysterious unknown cosmos.
